While 2023 may be most remembered with the widespread adoption of Generative AI models and tools like ChatGPT, the year has been marked with many other transformative technologies that have created the most positive impact across various facets of our lives, from education to healthcare and beyond.
The AES Group presents just some of the numerous high-impact outcomes of technology innovations in 2023 – a report we intend to make a tradition as we set a vision for ourselves to be an IT services company that relentlessly focuses on delivering technology solutions in partnership with our clients and our people that create positive impact to the society we all live in.
Education
- New learning opportunities for learners with disabilities – According to a 2023 UNESCO report, about 87% of visually impaired adults indicated that accessible technology devices were replacing traditional assistive tools.
- Radio, television and mobile phones enabling education among hard-to-reach populations – In Mexico, in-class support supplemented with televised lessons increased secondary school enrolment by 21%, according to a 2023 UNESCO report.
- Increased access to educational resources through digital technology – Adoption of digital technologies in National Academic Digital Library of Ethiopia and National Digital Library of India has for example dramatically increased access to teaching and learning resources in their countries. In particular, the Teachers Portal in Bangladesh has now over 600,000 users.
Healthcare
- Increased healthcare accessibility with telehealth – Even as pandemic restrictions have eased, volume of telehealth claim lines in the United States remains high at over 5% in 2023 compared to less 1% pre-pandemic, as reported by FAIRHealth. Telehealth innovations have improved healthcare accessibility and have also contributed to early detection of diseases and more efficient management of chronic conditions.
- Accelerating diagnosis and treatment with precision medicine technologies – Valley Children’s Hospital in Madera, California shared in November 2023 that it used to cost millions of dollars to sequence more than 3 billion pieces of information in the human genome to uncover where diseases start in the genes and to map out how they can be treated. With new technologies, doctors can now provide results in about a week, and sometimes in a day at a cost of just about $200.
Employee Experience
- Better work-from-home technology offers employees better workplace options – According to data from WFH Research, remotes workers in 2023 remains at a high 25%, compared to pre-pandemic’s 5% even as employers issue return-to-office mandates. Improvements and investments in collaboration technologies have proven effective in sustaining and even improving productivity and engagement of remote or hybrid workers.
- Improved worker productivity with Generative AI – With Generative AI models and tools going mainstream, various studies from most reputable institutions like MIT, Stanford University and National Bureau of Economic Research indicate workers productivity improvement of up to 37% with Generative AI.
